MEMORIAL DAY FOR FREEDOM HEROES The laying of wreaths at the Serbian and British Military cemetery by the representatives of the City, Palilula Municipality, Nisava District, Army, Police Administration and the Association of descendants of warriors, marked the 11th November, Armistice Day. At the Military cemetery on Delijski Vis were buried about two and a half thousand Serbian soldiers who gave their lives for the freedom. Beside them, there also rest their comrades from England and France. "The history of the Serbian people and its heroic sacrifices must not be forgotten, said Boban Džunić, president of Palilula Municipality, who paid tribute to the fallen Serbian soldiers and members of units of the British Commonwealth army. In the territory of the municipality and of the city, there are several memorials in the Old cemetery Gorica, in Gabrovac, Memorial Park "Bubanj". About necessary measures for their protection and maintenance we have introduced all the relevant Municipal authorities and institutions. In the Society for preserving the libertarian tradition say that the project has been completed so that Serbian Military cemetery could receive proper memorial. When Nis became the seat of the Supreme Command, during the Balkan wars in 1912, at this point in the settlement Delijski Vis, on more than five hectares, the burials began of warriors and military personnel. This area is at the end of WWI, in 1919, was adapted, a large metal fences and gates were raised. Serbian Military cemetery has been under protection since 1989. After honoring the Serbian soldiers, the leaders of the City of Nis and Palilula Municipality laid wreaths also at the English Military cemetery. British Commonwealth Military cemetery covers an area of about 300 square meters and is surrounded by a stone fence. It was put under the protection in 1983. It was created in 1915, when in the Military Hospital in Nis, nine English soldiers died from the Royal Military Army. The designer of the cemetery was the architect Robert Lorimer. In the central part of the cemetery is a memorial cross and 41 commemorative plaques with a raised plinth in six regular lines. British cemetery was consecrated on May 12 1929 in the presence of family members and a number of officials. This day November 11, is celebrated in all countries winners, and in Serbia it is a state holiday and has been celebrated since 2012. |
